Afghans unite throughout western Sydney

Afghans unite throughout western Sydney

Posted: Tue, Jul 14th, 2015

Australian Afghani youth and community leaders in Sydney’s western suburbs are working to overcome sectarian divides and bring harmony among their ethnically diverse young people of Pashtoon,Tajik and Hazara heritages.

A network of Auburn-based youth leaders is working with TAFE NSW in a campaign called Afghans Unite! that facilitates online and social projects to advocate for social harmony. The Campbelltown-based Afghan Fajar Association is also running camps and organising events with other communities to prevent young people going down a radical path.

The projects are attempting to overcome old ethnic divides that have been brought over from war-torn Afghanistan, typified by the persecution of a Hazara Shia minority, as well as tribal conflict between the two major Sunni groups – Pashtoons and Tajiks.

Today, Afghan Fajar Association (AFAIC) Collaborated with NSW Council for Pacific Communities and SWMAAC to Celebrate National Youth Week 2015 at Minto Community Centre. It was a day full of joy and harmony taking part in Youth activities on Health and Cultural Awareness.

It was a great pleasure to see the Cultural understandings and friendships this Youth Week event has built amongst the Multicultural Youth in NSW.

They partook in activities such as:

  • Boot camp
  • Boxing
  • Fun games

  • Social activities
  • Cultural dances

The Youth showed great pleasure at learning different Cultural performances and they contributed willingly. The event was brought to an end with lunch which everyone enjoyed. AFAIC would like to thank Matt from Point Magazine and the Girls Guide for being a part of the program today.
